Much of the infection transmission occurring within hospitals is missed by conventional surveillance methods. Without clear evidence of which cases are connected, Infection Prevention teams may be forced to investigate and intervene using incomplete information.
NGD exists to change that. Our mission is to make genomic surveillance accessible for routine hospital use, giving teams timely, actionable evidence to help identify transmission, target interventions and protect more patients.

OUR STORY
Built at the intersection of genomics, automation and Infection Prevention
NGD was founded in 2017 by Dr Paul A. Rhodes alongside scientific leaders from the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge, UK.
The company was created around a central idea: whole-genome sequencing could transform infection prevention, but only if it became fast, automated and practical enough for routine hospital use.
Since then, NGD has developed an integrated system that brings together automated sample preparation, sequencing, genomic analysis and epidemiological context. The result is a practical end-to-end workflow designed to deliver actionable transmission results within 24 hours of bacterial colonies being loaded into the NGD200.
Today, our multidisciplinary team works across microbiology, genomics, engineering, software development and Infection Prevention to help hospitals turn complex genomic data into evidence that can support everyday decisions.
OUR APPROACH
Genomic intelligence designed for routine hospital use
NGD brings the essential components of genomic infection surveillance into one integrated workflow.
Purpose-built automation
The NGD200 automates bacterial DNA extraction and sequencing-library preparation for up to 48 samples per run, reducing hands-on work and supporting consistent processing.
Infection Prevention context
NGD EpiAssist combines genomic findings with relevant epidemiological information, helping teams investigate where transmission may have occurred and coordinate appropriate interventions.
Actionable analysis
NGD automatically compares bacterial genomes to identify potential transmission links, without requiring specialist bioinformatics expertise from the hospital.
Practical implementation
The system is installed and supported in partnership with hospital laboratory, Infection Prevention, IT and security teams, with training and ongoing support provided by NGD.
